Passive House is a rigorous, voluntary building standard focused on creating ultra-low-energy homes. These homes use minimal energy for heating and cooling—often reducing energy consumption by 70–80%—while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment.

Homes built to Passive House standards are quiet, cozy, and efficient. Exceptional airtightness and high-performance insulation keep indoor temperatures consistent, improve air quality, reduce moisture, and help prevent pests. This means dry basements, comfortable living spaces year-round, and minimal reliance on mechanical systems.

The Passive House concept was pioneered in May 1988 by Bo Adamson of Lund University, Sweden, and Wolfgang Feist of the Institute for Housing and the Environment (Institut für Wohnen und Umwelt) in Darmstadt, Germany. Just two years later, the first Passive House buildings—a row of four houses in Darmstadt—were constructed, marking the beginning of this global movement in sustainable architecture.
