August 30, 2018CASTLETON RAMMED EARTH HOME
Ontario's first insulated rammed earth home is set into an east facing hill near Castleton, Ontario. To capture more light, the east and west portions of the building were pulled apart, allowing the central double height space to extend above the roof letting solar light and heat flood in. The house uses approximately 20kW/h/m2 to heat annually or almost Passive House efficient. The thermal mass of rammed earth ensures that air conditioning is not required.
