Tobacco Road Rammed Earth Home
August 30, 2018CASTLETON RAMMED EARTH HOME
Set into an east-facing hillside near Castleton, Ontario, this home is Ontario’s first insulated rammed earth residence — a landmark project in low-energy natural design.
To maximize light and solar gain, the east and west wings of the home were gently pulled apart, creating a double-height central space where daylight and warmth flood in from above. Cathedral ceilings showcase the spectacular rammed earth walls, grounding the modern form in timeless materiality.
The home’s massive earthen walls naturally regulate temperature, eliminating the need for air conditioning. With an annual heating energy use 80% lower than a typical home, it stands as proof that natural materials and advanced building science can coexist beautifully.
Featured in The Globe and Mail (Dave LeBlanc, Real Estate Section), this home exemplifies Stone’s Throw Design’s belief in conservation over technology, and longevity over fashion.
