This humble 1980s cottage began as a bit of a DIY experiment - rough around the edges, but with great bones and endless potential. Over time, we slowly transformed it using the five pillars of sustainable design, carefully upgrading the interior while respecting the character of the original structure. Improvements included low-carbon perlite (puffed clay) insulation and beautifully durable earthen floors in the basement.
But renovating slowly came with its own lessons. As we worked piece by piece, moisture control eventually became the biggest challenge. Without sufficient insulation and high-quality windows, condensation finds its way in - no matter how much air sealing or incremental improvements. To truly bring the cottage across the finish line and create a comfortable year-round retreat, we upgraded with striking shou sugi ban siding, new triple-glazed windows, and additional 6 inches of wood-fibre insulation, and a comprehensive exterior air-sealing system. The transformation was remarkable.
Condensation disappeared, and the home now maintains a steady, comfortable humidity between 40-60% - even in the basement. In winter, the house can stay above freezing without any heating at all, protecting the plumbing even during power outages.
South-facing triple-glazed windows capture the low winter sun, naturally warming the space on bright, cold days. As a result, the wood stove - once a necessity - now serves mainly as a cozy backup heat source rather than a daily requirement.
What began as a modest DIY cottage has become a resilient, energy-efficient home built to thrive through Muskoka winters.
